At first glance it's a conflict between relative have and have-not players on one hand, and relatively have and have-not owners on the other.  But since the owners' proposal is to make all players have-nots, it's harder for them to split the players while Fehr can hope to wear down owners in franchises that make more money playing hockey than not playing it.

    •  The problem is the power they've given Bettman (4+ / 0-)

It would take 23 of 30 owners to oust or overrule Bettman.

      •  They let him almost destroy hockey once already (6+ / 0-)

The owners of the NHL are complete fools, I particularly blame the  Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, the controlling owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs for allowing this to continue to go on. Of course they make money the same way the Cubs do, whether they succeed or not, so OTPP is about as good as Bain as an owner of an enterprise.

The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan sold their stake last winter.  Most of it went to Bell Canada and Rogers Communication, and Larry Tannenbaum's share went up modestly.

The implication (and I'm not saying that you're making it here) is that somehow Ontario teachers are responsible for problems within hockey.  Quite often on talk radio, people call in to complain about "the teachers" and not the pension plan.  The OTPP is independently managed an the teachers have no say in how it operates. Teachers in Ontario get enough flack especially with their own current labour dispute.
