  •  The European leagues have restrictions (0+ / 0-)

on how many foreign (usually NA) players each team can have.  This is to ensure the players of those countries are able to get jobs.  They are not going to just hand over the leagues to locked out NHLers.

That a much higher percentage of the players are European. The NHL Swedes can go back and play in Sweden or anywhere else in Europe. The Swedish teams don't have a limit on NHL players from Sweden. Russia, Finland, and other countries are the same.

And when these NHL players mean more money for European elite teams you can bet they will want more NHLers and will change the rules.

Hockey isn't like baseball or football. Hockey is almost bigger in Europe than it is in the US (on par with Canada). Players can easily find elite leagues in many countries and be well compensated. Plus since quite a few of the players are from those countries the teams there are more than happy to have them come "home".

    •  I've got a hunch that they wouldn't let that (2+ / 0-)
