    they can never, ever admit being wrong. That's the thing about asserting that you know precisely what God really wants; any retreat from what you've previousl asserted to be God's will means you're abandoning core principles. So you are forced to defend the indefensible, to the death, because any retreat invalidates the whole scheme.

      I look at groups like Focus on the Family (one of my favorite bumper stickers: Focus On Your Own Damned Family.) and I see not pure evangelists, but people seeking secular power.

      To the degree they want to remain politically relevant, I think their so-called core principles are somewhat malleable. They aren’t die-hard cultists. They have a sectarian religious agenda but they are also political operators and they want to stay in the game.
