  •  I think it's awesome that he picks these (14+ / 0-)

republicans and they end up bludgeoning themselves and tarnishing the republican brand. McChrystal, Alan Simpson, Geithner, Betrayus.....

they are given.  How much damage can they do in the time they are in office?  How much better would we have been if a real person of conscience was given the position?

It much be nice to be so tribalist that "hurting the Red Team" is preferable to appointments that would improve the nation!

      •  or... the future harm and power is prevented (0+ / 0-)

by giving them enough rope NOW... defuse some near term obstruction from their allies by bringing them into a position of responsibility... some risk involved but it uses their strengths in the short term and allows them to implode in time and be taken off the board and their future options reduced.

Huntsman is a somewhat different similar example... he might have been a sane alternative to nominating Mitt... but Huntsman  was offered the Ambassadorship to China... a plumb posting perfect for his abilities... and at the same time it probably damaged him in the eyes of the conservative base... boom... nomination chances "poof".

Petraeus seems eerily similar... potential 2016 Republican nominee (strong on paper up to a point) taken on board... and now neutralized...

The Republicans have long looked at up and coming Dem stars to find ways to short circuit their careers... quite a few have been shot down before they could become a threat in a high level race. (good in some ways... better a scandal sooner than in the middle of a big race)... But now it almost seems like Dems... some anyway have a kinder gentler way of taking out potential electoral rivals... hire them and let them self-destruct... if not just taint them with "bi-partisanship"... so they either get tagged as a sellout or end up revealing their shortcomings enough to damage their image fatally.

yeah.  the headlines are "Republican falls into disgrace" rather than "Obama's head of CIA falls into disgrace"

that's an incredible stretch.  Got to wonder how many times Obama can shoot himself in the foot with this stuff.
