  •  As always, there's no shortage (11+ / 0-)

of leading Democrats who figure that those of the rank-and-file opposed to "entitlement reform" have nowhere to go.

It doesn't seem to bother them that large numbers of the rank-and-file might just stay at home on Election Day.

Side that protected entitlements.  So if dems line up and vote for it while republicans all say no, except a few...it will look like 2010, but this time it may last because young people may feel they were snookered.  See bailout.

If they do this, try better not walk the plank alone if they want any type of power in the future.

      •  What if both sides screw over paid benefits? (0+ / 0-)

First off, it's not "entitlements".  That's right-wing "47% language", designed to get old white people angry about all those brown people taking "your" benefits.  The truth is that those benefits are yours.  You paid for them, out of your taxes.  For politicians to take them, for any purpose, under any pretext, is theft, plain and simple.

Second, your first sentence is predicated on the notion that one side will vote to obliterate the program, and that the other side will protect it. That doesn't seem to me to be at all likely.  Were Congress to vote its natural inclinations, austerity (for you and me) would have been law 18 months ago.  Half the House "Progressive" Caucus voted for the shit sandwich.  Surely the Democrats will pose as the defenders of Social Security and Medicare.  But given their actions of the last 3 years, that pose would be completely phony.

Shirley Chisholm was right. Our Republic is in deep trouble.
