OWS was teargassed into nonentity status, and obviously enough of its participants voted for Obama anyway.

    •  OWS was tiny. (3+ / 0-)

We were at most ten thousand around the country.  If there is a serious attack on the social safety net then people are going to be hurting and they will be looking for an organization that has experience organizing and speaks to their issues.  OWS is the most visible and immediate of those.  If OWS, or something like it, had protests the size of the anti-war protests leading up to Iraq then it would have an effect.

It's not a perfect organization but cutting SS plays right into the message that Dems and the GOP are the same.

The revolution will not be televised. But it will be blogged, a lot. Probably more so than is necessary.

worse before you see large numbers in the street. We have been barely surviving on what little UE and food stamps are left. But when those are gone and people get real hungry the mood is going to get ugly. And Europe is in danger also. Any serious cut to the safety net may tear it in half. Yet we hear the refrain "UE is keeping people from looking for work because they are lazy." A Republican Congressman just said that today. And on my Facebook account I hear this all the time from people who should know better.

        •  Food stamps are already being cut, right? (1+ / 0-)

By a few billion.  Hungry people, or people with hungry children, are angry people.  And if there's a group out there who clearly has a plan for feeding folks, which occupy does, then it's not much of a choice where to go if you're pissed at the government.

anything that looks like this miserable POS. The fact they agreed to the shit, even in a less advantageous position in 2011, makes my blood boil.

when there is a second Depression, which I expect to happen within the next two years. Possibly the next year.

Austerity is coming, all right. Not the politicians' and the banksters', but the far more severe austerity imposed by the physical limits of the planet.

The world economic system that has existed since the Industrial Revolution is predicated on the infinite availability of cheap energy and the belief that the external costs of pollution can be completely neglected.

Both of which assumptions have become completely untenable--have been untenable for three or so decades now.

Our economic system is the biggest and most elaborate attempt there has ever been to fit a square peg in a round hole. And we all know where that leads.

There will be consequences, such as have never been seen in human history.

OWS will serve to scatter seeds which can preserve what is valuable in human civilization and help carry us through the coming ordeal.

We will need one another, and when we do, OWS will return in force.

and it's being proven in New York and other places hit by Sandy.  That's what's important.  When there are enough people then it happens.  And it will happen.  We're all working on different parts.

          Good luck.
