Would you sit and eat a meal( even if given in the best spirit as im sure this one is) Celebrating Perl Harbor?
We (Many members of the tribes in general and many cherokee in specific) dont celebrate thanks giving.  Its more of a day to remember and mourn.

    •  Most Indians I know eat Thanksgiving (9+ / 0-)

dinner--and give thanks to the CREATOR, not to the unsettler population and its government.

Given this country's genocidal history and the ongoing destruction and desecration of the Land and life ways, EVERY DAY is a day of mourning for me.

If there are folks in Indian Country who need food on this day, I'm not going to let my need to mourn stand in their way.

Yes, many members of many tribes in general don't celebrate Thanksgiving and in fact actively participate in Day of Mourning activities, but as Navajo's post also makes clear, many others DO prepare and eat Thanksgiving dinner, in whatever spirit they choose. It's not my business to tell them they should stop eating and weep. It's really not.

    •  Excuse me, please read previous Okiciyap (8+ / 0-)

diaries. One diary raised money for food, when people were being turned away from an empty food pantry. If the Native Americans at Isabel, S.D. are requesting our help to feed people, we will help.

Please read the previous Okiciyap diaries.

The Native Americans that are part of these group, and the people that have been helping them for a very long time, are organizing this.

Of course, follow your own customs. Me, I'd rather help feed people, especially hungry children.

It is not about political correctness, it is about food,

      •  the diary didn't say that (0+ / 0-)
If the Native Americans at Isabel, S.D. are requesting our help to feed people, we will help.
it didn't state the request was made from the tribe.  it just sounded like an honorable, charitable effort to provide some food to a tribe that need some for their pantry.

i questioned the notion of making it about 'Thanksgiving' for the reasons stated. you didn't witness the recent firestorm in our district on the cultural sensitivity surrounding  'Thanksgiving' for some Native Americans.  i was just cautioning with regard to that.  even the diarist agreed to uncertainty when i raised the question.

        That is a good question (14+ / 0-)

but my understanding is that families do have a day of giving thanks, and from my understanding, do participate.

Let me ask the Okiciyap folks and see what they say.

only after i made my comment did the diarist say it was a request from the tribe.
        In any case (12+ / 0-)

this was their idea, so that should give you an indication.

i didn't say anything about depriving them of food.

I'm a blue drop in a red bucket.
