  •  showing that shareholder value isn't the only (8+ / 0-)

way to organize and direct the actions of a company.

Companies that optimize for shareholder value over the welfare of their employees, the advantage of their customers, and the good of the planet are making a conscious choice.  Capitalism does not lock them into that course of action.  They choose greed over the common good.

I'm a bit low on flax meal and quinoa--better stop by the store....

    •  but this is all about shareholder (0+ / 0-)

value. It's just that the employees are the shareholders.

      •  as the new shareholders (0+ / 0-)

will they suddenly seek only to increase the value of their shares?  Or does who runs the company make a difference?  Will they continue to do what is right by their employees, their customers and the planet, or as shareholders will they pursue only to increase the value of their shares?

This is the point--the rapacious values of many businesses are not intrinsic to capitalism, rather they are innate in the people who run them.  There is another path open to every company.  Too few take that alternate path.
