  •  Yeah, so does Petraeus, but you're not (23+ / 0-)

judging him for it. That's how misogynistic double standards work, huh? If you have a problem with ladies being overtly sexual, you might find Red State a good fit. They're all in a tizzy over the "sluts," so you'd have a lot of friendly company.

Also, you have no evidence that Kelley slept with anyone but her husband. It's not her fault that she's been harassed.

    •  who's harassing her? (0+ / 0-)

Sleeping with a married man makes Broadwell a bad person, but slut shaming isn't going to get us anywhere.

and the men in this sordid story need to be judged the same as the women.

Please stand by. I'm looking for a new sig line.

      •  Yeah. And sleeping with a married woman (5+ / 0-)

who was in his chain of command part of the time makes Pertreaus worse.  (I'm assuming but not sure this latter is true.  I'm not up enough on the ranks and situation but the impression I got is Broadwell was in some kind of active service under the General's chain of command while in Afghanistan writing his biography)

If they had sex during that period, He's both a slut and someone who potentially abused his position of power.   It doesn't really matter if she "wanted it anyway", adults keep it in their pants while arranging a transfer out of chain of command.  If the sex happened then they also both violated the military code of conduct.

Seriously, what is so fucking hard about keeping it in your pants for some people?   I've occasionally been strongly attracted to inappropriate people, but I haven't acted on it since I was 19.   These are both mature adults.  Sheesh.

        •  She was in private life then, not in service. (0+ / 0-)

Working on Ph.D. at that time. They say didn't start until he was civilian.

          •  That's something at least (0+ / 0-)

Means they were aware of and respected the military code of justice, and also they didn't have a direct power relationship (she'd got what she needed for her book and PhD before he left Afghanistan).

So given the bad decision to have an affair, at least they didn't make it worse by violating their military and professional standards.

Although what actually happened is textbook on WHY you have adultery as a crime in the military code and sleeping with co-workers is discouraged even when it doesn't fall under sexual harassment.    Too much risk of drama.

In this case, one party feels threatened by a possible competitor, starts harassing them, prompting an investigation and at least two lives/careers ruined, plus damage to their families.

Just how good does the sex have to be to risk all that?

    •  Who's not judging Petraeus? (18+ / 0-)

I sure am.  He was a dumbass and if you want to call him a slut, I certainly won't object.

The comment about Broadwell and Kelley was a direct reply to the one about 'Guys', so I don't even think there was any 'double standards' coming into play, just someone directly responding to a gender dig with one in kind, but limited to the specific players involved, unlike the broad brush smear to which it replied.

As to Kelley's behaviour, well, as noted in comments above

According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of  “potentially inappropriate” e-mails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall. Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.
She seems to be as much a dumbass as most of the other people involved in all of this.
      •  That's a hell of a lot of email between 2 people. (5+ / 0-)

Do you think the story is they went through 20-30k mails of his emails and found some inappropriate?

Even people who I have regularly emailed for the past 10 years, I can't imagine the total number would come to tens of thousands.

If you emailed someone once a day, for 10 years you would get less that 4k total.

        •  and even so, "Inappropriate" (0+ / 0-)

can mean "security Inappropriate" just as well as "Sexually inappropriate" or maybe even "politically inappropriate".

And yes, I think the number  of emails is probably overstated as well.  For instance, 30,000 could be the number of messages between two offices, but only a small subset actually between two particular persons.

I don't trust any weasel words (like "inappropriate") or numbers in MSM sources on first viewing. Too many reports, too few editors and copyreaders and fact checkers....
