    ...though I read it after reading his book on moral fiction and the white book.  

    He famously said he'd sacrifice a character's ear for melody in a sentence, which I am an absolute sucker for, and I admire his obsessions a lot, which means I read his longer fiction (really long, like the Sunlight Dialogues, not shortish long like October Light) in part to see what he has to say about art and story.  

    My fave thing by him though is still the short story "John Napper Sailing through the Universe" -- the subject was apparently the illustrator for The Sunlight Dialogues, though I know this only as rumour.  I think it is damn near perfect.
