  •  UMC is just Baptist-lite (5+ / 0-)

In the South, when you can't deal with the snake-handlin' Baptists, but you still love your Jesus and can't imagine becoming Catholic, you turn to the Methodists.

    •  Where I came from, UMC was significantly (2+ / 0-)

more reasonable and considerate than any Baptists in our parts.  But then, mileage probably varies from locale to locale.

Baptist-lite wouldn't describe Methodists I'm familiar with at all.   They were more like Liberal Lutherans than anything related to Baptists.  ;-)

    •  Not so outside the South (0+ / 0-)

In my home town, and back in my youth (a long time ago), the Baptists were tee-totaling folk who thought playing cards and attending movies were sinful. The Methodists thought none of that. They were boring mainstream Protestants. But boring was a problem for them. The average age of my Mom's church was about 80 and they weren't attracting any young members (and failed to attract me).
