These mind-reading expeditions always leave me filled with rolled eyeballs.

What will drive GOP evolution is the need to win elections, not remote psychology performed by partisan pundits.

as the base needs to be fed, and their cultivated base dines on a diet of Hammity and Limburger.  You're assuming that there are still a cadre of folks who will vote R even though they don't share the base's need for ideological purity in their candidate.

Seems to me that, unless and until the far right insanity of the baggers, religionists and racists is better marginalized (and I think the economy is the only way to do that) the R's are going to remain a party unable to win except where those values still hold sway.

The biggest change in our politics since  911 is that fear of the 'other' has become the dominant message of the right (1930's Germany anyone?)  To the extent that demographics favor the 'other', we're in pretty good shape.   To the extent that Limburger and Hammity still influence the rights rabid base, we're in pretty good shape.

Yet 'fear' even led Dems to follow Bush and Cheney down the disastrous paths we're still paying for.  Next time there's a threat, lets have some balls and do what's right, not what plays to fear.

      •  The GOP will be forced to cultivate a new "base" (0+ / 0-)

The Southern Strategy is defunct. The GOP cannot win the POTUS election on the backs of elderly white male voters any more. They will be forced to forge a now voting coalition because the actuary never sleeps.

It sounds like we are seeing much the same thing. The difference is I feel ambition wins out every time. Younger politicians will want to win actual not mere 'moral' victories. So the GOP will change - though that process is likely to last a few election cycles and be quite difficult for them.

      •  OK, since we're already Godwinned, (0+ / 0-)

I can mention that I keep thinking of the line from Cabaret where someone says to a rich person "So, do you still think you can control them?".

        •  Actually, not. (0+ / 0-)

There is no comparison made to 'Hitler' or 'Nazis' in my comment.  The comparison is to the conditions present in Germany at that time, and to the potential for them to be exploited by the 'right'.

I wish I remembered that line from Cabaret.....great show.
