  •  why does this kill health insurance? (7+ / 0-)

I know that I can't ask Republican'ts to look at other countries, because (something) but we have plenty of private hospitals here in the UK and insurance policies and competition and all - AND the NHS ie socialised medicine (eek).

Why? The NHS provides cover, but if you want a private room in hospital, or to pick your operation date etc (there can be long delays with the NHS) or precise location etc - then you need private care.  Some of us don't care to pay and love the NHS, but if you want to be exclusive etc, you can.  Do your conservatives think so little of the private industry choice as to believe that it can't compete???

    •  Right, the problem is that health insurers now (5+ / 0-)

literally have sweetest deal EVER -- the government takes care of the military folks, the old (65 +), the poor (Medicaid), the poor kids (CHIP) and the super sick (Medicare or high-risk pools), and the big-profit insurers get to cover all the healthy, middle-aged people -- it's a great gamble. And it pays big.

The issue in the US is that the private insurers refuse to give up the massive amount of control/power/money they have now for a tangential private role, as is the case in Europe.
