  •  I also think that... (11+ / 0-)

It gives some people a way to feel "Better than" in spite of all evidence to the contrary.  Look at your typical white supremist.  These are people that need to feel they have something that makes them "Better" than someone else.  \

In fact, from personal observations, the more impoverished a white person is, the more likely it seems that they will be racists.  That is why they vote against their own interest because their pride says they cannot allow themselves to become like the "Others" for purposes of pride.

All the Republicans have to do is define what it is to be "Other" and they will vote against it every time.

    •  on the other hand, many impoverished whites (3+ / 0-)

have learned useful strategies from black people, about how to get along in a world that doesn't like you

i've seen it over and over, families melding, loving the beautiful mixed race babies

but often such people are so poor, voting is not something they do, just registering to vote scares them off

      •  I guess, most of my eperience is with... (5+ / 0-)

Rural poverty as opposed to urban poverty.  Hills of West Virginia, Rural Ohio, Appalachain Kentucky, rural Georgia, (once upon a time) rural California...

These people have nothing, unable to feed and cloth their kids properly and yet they cling to their racial superiority.  Many of them are barely middle school educated.  Now, I'm not saying these are bad people.  Many of them would give you the shirt off their back, feed you with their last spoonful of food and fight for you to the death if they had to.  They have been some of the most generous, kind people I have ever known...to me.  But with that said, they would talk about other races as if they were the absolute trash of the earth.  It is amazing how someone so nice and generous, who had so little, could be at the same time hateful towards another human being because of their skin color but they are.  I know lots of them.

In order to get kids (I am speaking of 18-25 year olds) to pick up a gun and shoot people the government decides to go to war with, you first have to de-humanize that other group of people.  Stories of Jews killing babies was popular among the Germans during WWII to help justify their treatment.  Once the people are no longer people, it is easier for soldiers to carry out orders to kill them.  The same thing happens in our culture.  By convincing people that this group or that group are not really human, it is easy to hate them, to blame them for all of your ills and it is easy to kill them when push comes to shove.  That is why so many lynchings were performed by what would, by every other measure, seem to be normal, good people.

Having these, less than human, objects to feel superior to is something that many people cling to as one of their few sources of pride.  One of the worst insults in my youth was to either call someone a fag or a ni--er (or wannabe or lover, etc...).  You were afraid to like or say something positive about a black person or a homosexual.  This is beaten into you by your peers.  I grew up in an all white town so there was no chance to put anything into practice but the rhetoric was mind blowingly violent and degrading.

I proof read that twice and didn't even look at the subject line.

I live in rural N. California and just today looked at the final election results for my county and it was straight Republican and Conservative. I emailed my family members a link to the election results webpage with the subject title 'My opinion, we're surrounded by stupid people."

Under the GOP platform this area would sink further economically (it's close to the bottom now, if not already there) and the voting locals still thought Romney/Ryan was a good idea. Voter turnout was about 60% which tells me not many young people voted compared to the retirees in our area.

This area has a lot of problems no one really works to fix. The old boy network likes things just like they are. 'Poor white trash' are very profitable if you're a farmer or a meth distributor

          Welcome to the 13th century....

Something that doesn't make good sense, makes bad sense. That means someone is being deliberately hurtful & selfish. Look for motives behind actions & words.
