    1989:  on the 25th anniversary of the Philadelphia, Mississippi, murders, Congress passed a non-binding resolution honoring the three men, Republican  Senator Trent Lott and the rest of the Mississippi delegation refused to vote for it.

    2002: Sen. Trent Lott said Mississippi voters were proud to have supported [later Republican ] Senator Strom Thurmond when he ran for president on a segregationist platform in 1948 saying :
