  •  Bush rode to re-election in 2004 (0+ / 0-)

LARGELY on a wave of anti-gay sentiment that stemmed from, among other actions, Mayor Gavin Newsom legalizing gay marriage in San Fran.  I remember the freakout panicked feeling that liberals were getting that year, because we were feeling like we'd grasped an electoral anvil.  The shine had worn off of Bush that year, and his razor-thin margin of victory proves it, and I remember a lot of people thinking we lost to Bush not just because of swiftboating, not just because the country wouldn't switch horses mid-apocalypse, but because Newsom (and others) mobilized a massive homophobic freak-out.

The rapid turning of that tide is a relief and the GOP roundly deserves to be mocked for it.  I remember saying back then, possibly on these pages even, that the future would look back on 2004 as a dark, uncivilized era and the people whose whole cause of existence was to hurt gays and demonize them would be looked on as villains and degenerates.

It is so sweet to be vindicated on that one.  Not the least because in the meantime my child has come out to me and I've worried endlessly about his future.  This year, I don't have quite so much of a worry.

And yeah, the GOP got exactly what they deserved on that, and yeah, I am OK with calling it what it is.

Plus, is it possible for Democrats and liberals to ever learn to loudly crow we won motherfuckers and not have someone concern-trolling our exultation?  Maybe?

the butt-fucking part of the comment is justifiably offensive to many gays.

Purging predominantly minority voters and requiring them to present IDs to vote in the face of VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT VOTER FRAUD is RACISM! I hereby declare all consenting Republicans RACISTS until they stand up and object to these practices!
