Multiple people in this thread are suggesting that you take this to small claims court.

I would recommend that you be very sure to find out whether or not this is a legal debt first.

Courts will not assist you in obtaining money from an unpaid illegal debt.

I think you are screwed, except from a perspective of publicizing it. Then again, you might have to actually be careful that you are not over the line into harassment.

This sort of thing has caused problems for gamblers (who have their own message boards and forums). What has evolved in the internet age is that if the parties don't know each other very well or if there is a question of trust, then a third party escrow is put into place. (Often this person will be considered to be a judge for the wager and will take a small fee as well.)

The plural of anecdote is not data.

When he failed to pony up his $1,000 to a 3rd party and really put his money where his mouth is, you would have known from the start what his intentions were.

Then you could have shamed him right from the start.

Are there some blue leading blogs in VA?  Getting the info out to them might be a nice idea.  It's easy for him to turn off twitter, etc.   But to have to deal with random confrontations and ridicule at the grocery store (NOT stalking) & gas station, the neighborhood & parties, is ALMOST as much fun!
