  •  The Great Mentioners. Is there a list (4+ / 0-)

of the Great Mentioners and their picks for Mentionies?

Oh, and their rankings, too.  Maybe updated once a week, for ease of keeping up with things?  The Bye Bye Petraeus scandal
has too many players to keep straight, but a pleasant little ongoing scandal to go with my morning coffee would be nice.

    Time is a long river.

powerfully muscled yet politically-sensitive thumbs, which point up or down in firm judgment, or even spin rapidly in whatever direction the winds of The Fates seem to be blowing, accompanied by analytical sounding metaphors from sports, movies and 'business', linking odd bits of history together as 'context' and 'prevailing narrative', and able to do this while dressed in expensive respectable looking suits, juggling a fine bourbon or glass of expensive wine and a cigar.

They are skilled in the pretence of being realistic, wise and sympathetic, especially while twisting the long knives stabbing in the back of the careers of others with thoughtful regret and concern for others for failing to acknowledge the political 'realities' which they know so well and work diligently, nay, militantly, to maintain.  You can tell when they are twisting these knives when they come back multiple times to that 'talking point' item that bleeds in the course of one interview.

The Greatest of these Great Mentioners may be David Gergen or David Frum, but this seems to be a honary title that shifts after each DC cocktail or dinner party, election or scandal. I'm guessing Meghan Kelly may be on her way to joining this elite club after her onscreen neutering of GOP numerologist Karl Rove. This class of predators and parasites always respect someone able to harpoon a great white whale like Karl Rove and Mitt Romney, even at the same time, especially if they can also toss their narrative nets to entangle other key players in the White House, Pentagon, or other major power players.  Declaring and explaining failure, and counting coup or referring 'out of bounds' calls is perhaps more important than merely mentioning future rising stars, but the political rodeo gates do have to keep opening to release fresh stock.
