most other lands, and the Chinese shopkeeper won't take offense at or be surprised by a lowball 50% offer.  Happens every day and with every transaction there.  No one is trying boost their ego; both sides are trying to arrive at a fair deal.

      "which always surprised shop keepers."

Have you ever asked a chinese shopkeeper if a 50% lowball offer is offensive?
or do you just assume this ?

      •  also haggling IS the culture for many shopkeepers (0+ / 0-)

here in the US.  of course there would be no shopkeepers if not for the customers who are willing to purchase at a fair price. the 50% customer as no empathy for the seller and could careless if the seller benefits from the transaction.  I know this customer well.

      •  No, in China you have to offer like a 90% (1+ / 0-)

lowball offer to get thrown out and have the door slammed in your face.  Many products in China sell for 50% off what the price tag says.  Rule #1 is that they aren't going to sell for a loss.  Maybe they won't get away with the insane markups that we live with in the US, but they will sell at a profit.

        •  No shopkeeper is going to throw someone out (0+ / 0-)

unless they are a thief (5% off top of inventory right there) or someone causing a commotion.  Rule # 1 feed your children, rule 2 pay the rent , if you can not grasp that I dont know what to tell you.

    •  Exactly, in China they think you are stupid (1+ / 0-)
