  •  Anyone who thinks the president isn't determined (10+ / 0-)

and doesn't have the dominant position over both Democrats and Republicans isn't reading the tea leaves the way I am. One thing I've learned about this president is that when he makes his mind up, he's stubborn. That memo from last year on what he was willing to give up was a major eye opener.

But getting Social Security off the table is the key to pushing him in the right direction. Once Social Security's revenue stream is out of the loop, they're gonna have to find the cuts and/or tax increases to be bigger in the ball game. And if the cuts come too deep, they're going to have tilt more heavily towards the tax increases. That's how we turn the president's heavy leverage to our advantage.

Just saying don't cut anything....this president isn't going to hear any of that. That will most surely get us dismissed from the table.

And lets not forget, there is a shitload of other important things in the discretionary budget that we don't want to see get the heavy end of the axe.

In other words, we want them to go looking for the revenue side of things in the form of taxation more than we want them to look for cuts.

He apparently is not willing to look at defense cuts.  I saw a quote a few days ago to that effect, that as commander in chief he couldn't support them. Unfortunately, resisting defense cuts doesn't get anyone dismissed from the table.

The state races are more consequential for our daily lives than the presidential race. GOTV

    •  The President's legacy (0+ / 0-)

Every President wants to carve out his own unique place in history.  For this President, it appeared to be the Affordable Care Act would be his legacy legislation.  But now with his dogged persistence over deficit reduction, I am beginning to wonder if that is what he sees as his real legacy.

As for Medicare, I keep going back to that "off the record" interview with the Des Moines Register in which he said the following:

It will probably be messy. It won’t be pleasant. But I am absolutely confident that we can get what is the equivalent of the grand bargain that essentially I’ve been offering to the Republicans for a very long time, which is $2.50 worth of cuts for every dollar in spending, and work to reduce the costs of our health care programs.
President Obama is the one who appointed the Simpson/Bowles Commission and he is the one who has pushed for the implementation of the unofficial recommendations of Simpson/Bowles.
