I recognized him the first time he smirked his way onto the national scene.  "Who's your favorite philosopher," they asked him during a GOP primary debate.

"Jesus Christ," said the guy who bragged and chuckled about his record of capital punishment as governor.

    "We're screwed," said I.

"We'll be in a war we don't need to fight, people will die," was my argument to all my "They're both the same," Nader friends who wouldn't support Gore and accused me of not following MY principles because I was.

As my family mourned and talked on 9-11-01 I told my dad, "Well this is what they needed.  They'll get us into Iraq with this."

I knew even as I was crying about the deaths, because of the president in office, the disaster was just starting.

I'm not being an "I told you so," really.  It was always just so maddening to see the nightmares unfold as I expected.  It has been a challenging century.

I remember when I first heard that the Rs wanted Bush as their nominee - I laughed out loud. I thought, "How ridiculous!" I thought, "They'd never be that stupid, and he'd never get far enough along in the process anyway."

I was right only with my first thought: how ridiculous. Didn't know it'd be disastrous as well.

Being the single intellectual in a village of 1,100 souls ain't much fun, especially when 1,099 of those don't think you're all that smart.--Lucy Marsden
