  •  It's been a long, long time since (6+ / 0-)

I enjoyed a "real Christmas". My maternal grandmother kept us on track with her traditions: ages-old little decorations hanging from pine boughs in vases, gingerbread cookies in the shape of trees with white icing and green sprinkles, playing piano, flute, and cello Christmas carols after the same Christmas eve dinner. Oh, and a tree in the entrance hall of her apartment with just white lights and tinsel. When I was an infant, the tree was lit with real candles, a situation that Underwriter's Laboratory would find highly problematic!

We had to dress in our best clothes even in the harsh Boston weather, and nobody got to see, much less rip open, any presents until all the festivities were conducted.

Years later, I watched in dismay as my nephew, probably 12 years old at the time, shredded the wrapping on the "big" present, a robotics kit that my husband and I and my mom had bought him, something he had really wanted. After fawning over the gift for a moment or two, he began looking around at the other presents in the room, saying "I have the feeling that there's something else here for me!"

That was the moment that the joy of Christmas with family ended for me. My dad would have stuffed me headfirst into a snowdrift for that kind of wise-assed remark. My husband and I were livid. Nobody else seemed to care. Now I ship their presents to them ahead of time, and enjoy the holidays without them.

Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it... in summer school.
