  •  Hypocrites, one and all (9+ / 0-)

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

    •  One of the first things I asked when this (3+ / 0-)

story broke was whether or not Petraeus and the Civil Libertarians had finally found common ground.

Now having said that, my very smart and practical friend who was raised in a military family said, "Nobody made him take that job."  What she meant was that it came with the burden of responsibilities that he had the option to decline.  If your job description says that you should not sleep around, I guess you have to expect blow back if you do...

      •  My running buddy is a former recon marine (6+ / 0-)

gunnery sgt and he told me that Petreus has power we common folks just cannot fathom:

If Petreus walked past a Marine (Petreus is Army) he has so much power he can tell a Marine or whomever to "Find me some Easter Eggs", you'd better shit the easter Bunny right away. Because he could ruin your life on a whim.
That power went to his head. He thought he was above reproach.

Makes his downfall all the more interesting as he did it to himself and was brought down by basic emails.

        •  The military culture produces the closest (5+ / 0-)

thing to monarchy we have in this country - aside from the Bush family.

That's one reason that I'm not wild about putting their leadership into civilian government roles either by appointment or through the election process.  I don't care if he thought he needed a harem as much as I do about the fact that he came with a decision-making process that does not have a particularly democratic (with a little "d") view of how he should operate in his leadership position.

Honestly, I always believed that the Petraeus loyalty from the Obama camp would end in tears, somehow.  I didn't know how, but I just expected it to do so eventually.
