  •  France24 on the plan to topple Abbas after UN vote (0+ / 0-)

search for "29 November on Observer Status for Palestinian State" reveals this new item from France24:

A paper published by Israel’s foreign ministry argues that “toppling” Mahmoud Abbas would be “the only option” if the Palestinian Territories succeed in obtaining observer status at the United Nations on November 29.

Israel's foreign ministry has proposed in a policy paper "toppling" Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas if a Palestinian bid for state observer status at the United Nations is approved later this month.

"Toppling Abu Mazen's (Abbas's) regime would be the only option in this case," the position paper obtained by AFP says. "Any other option... would mean waving a white flag and admitting the failure of the Israeli leadership to deal with the challenge."

On Ynet: PA bid: Israel threatens to topple Abbas

Foreign Ministry draft position paper states that should the Palestinian Authority receive the status of a non-member state at the United Nations, the only viable option would be "to overthrow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas."

The paper, drafted ahead of the Palestinians' November 29 UN bid, said that "a soft response would be tantamount to an Israeli admission that it cannot handle the challenge."

The draft paper, which has been adopted by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, stated that the "reality of a UN-recognized Palestinian state would crush Israel deterrence and completely undermine its credibility which would render any future settlement impossible."

Apparently, further down the article President Abbas has Millions stashed in private funds and worries about being toppled in a popular movement.

      •  I don't think anyone here questions (2+ / 0-)

the fact that Abbas is corrupt.  Or that he's put a less than convincing amount of distance between his current tailored-suited appearance and his previous incarnation as terrorist.  (Traits he shares with more than a few leaders in recent Israeli history . . . just sayin'.)

What's notable here is that at least part of Official Israel is openly saying that Abbas has become an inconvenience and needs to be removed.  Curiously, I don't think they have the promotion of Palestinian elections in mind.
