  •  This isn't even about doctors making the (27+ / 0-)

decisions - it's about hospitals which don't permit doctors to perform the procedures the doctors believe is necessary and want to perform.

It would be bad enough, but not horrendous if a doctor refused to perform a necessary abortion, but the doctor's not likely to be the only one around for miles and miles.  The facility itself prohibiting it, though, will often mean there's no way to get it down anywhere for miles and miles and miles.

What we need is a law passed that would make any facility that refuses to perform a procedure subject to a lawsuit for negligence.  If they're going to put themselves in the position of providing medical care for an area, then they should be given a responsibility for providing medical care.

compulsion.  A health care facility may not have the best means to handle a given procedure, such as cardio or neuro, and may well be making the best decision to hand a patient off for more specialized care.

Granted, a 'I just don't want to do it' attitude is abhorrent, but should a physician be compelled to act in a non-life threatening situation?

      •  Of course there would have to be limitations (0+ / 0-)

and qualifications as there are in virtually every law.  And I said nothing about a doctor being compelled to do anything, I said the facility.  If a doctor in a facility believes a procedure is the appropriate one and is willing to do it and the facility refuses to permit it, yes, I believe the facility should be held responsible for the consequences of that decision.
