My father's friends, for which he never forgave McCain.  Whenever my father told the story, he would conclude by saying that anyone but the admiral's son would've been court-martialed*.   To this day, the incident features in Navy training films as a case study in what not to do.

*Dim Son (who'd hidden in the radio room while others organized rescue efforts) was taken off before the wounded survivors.   On the Oriskany until he was sent off for R&R and eventual transfer, McCain was shunned by all as a moral leper.

    •  From what I've read, it was a sin of omission. (0+ / 0-)

Everyone else ran to  put out the fire, which is what you should do (husband worked the flight deck of carriers for 6 years). McCain hung out in the ready room.  He didn't disobey any orders, but he sure came out looking like a fucking coward. And he should have  at the very least faced consequences. Just as he should have for crashing two planes.

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.
