    next congress, but I don't think it matters much in terms of leverage.

    Really, the only leverage that matters right now is that the dems control the Senate and the Republicans control the house.  Dems have improved their numbers a smidge, but that isn't going to change how the republicans in the house vote.

    As for the senate, we can get rid of filibusters, but until we control the house, that won't matter for legislative issues (it matters a lot for cabinet and judicial appointments).

    We do have a touch of leverage right now, after the election...but that is more perception than reality (though perception is reality to some degree).

    So...I guess all I am saying is that it looks to me like we are basically in the same place for the next two years as we were for the last.  Obama is on a slightly better position in terms of public opinion, and he can use that to his advantage.  But really, in terms of votes in congress...almost nothing has changed.
