    it's not uncommon to see the occasional black person shopping in supermarkets in rural areas. Everybody behaves themselves, and the merchants are glad to have their money.

    If they want ethnic food and they want to purchase it at an ethnic-owned shop, they might have to drive a long, long way if they live in some of the more rural areas. Some people live hours even from the nearest hospital.  But to be honest, the supermarket chains up here have much better variety than they used to, and I suspect it is the same even in rural areas.
