  •  I have homemade mesh feeders similar to the (11+ / 0-)

    one you have the sunflower seeds in.  I fill them with shelled raw peanuts. Nuthatches, chickadees and woodpeckers come and break off chunks which they extract between the wires and then carry off to eat.

      well, not really chasing, but trying to get some good photos of a red-bellied woodpecker over the weekend.  I could HEAR him, since he chitters as he takes flight... and he was flying from yard to yard, tree to tree since I was out doing clean up.

      While chasing him with the camera, there I see the yellow-bellied sapsucker, belly glowing yellow in the sun!  :D

      The red-bellied was after the sunflower seeds, though, and ignored the peanuts.  The jays love those peanuts, and I set the feeder up to distract them from the other feeders.
