  •  I would oppose any change to the Defense sequester (15+ / 0-)

That was the essential poisoned pill to get Republicans to negotiate in good faith. Without it, their incentive disappears completely because they don't have an interest, at least not a constructive interest, in the fate of the economy.

    •  Right, but I mean, in a final push (0+ / 0-)

to a somewhat permanent deal, that might need to happen.  Tax reform and any discussion on entitlement changes would be pushed until next year, and Obama would certainly be in a better position to veto changes in those areas.

GOP wouldnt like that, but they might go along if the defense cuts get scaled back.

    •  Their interest is harming the economy because (6+ / 0-)

for some reason America still thinks Republicans are more likely to fix the economy than Democrats are.  It's the media and big business pushing this meme constantly and many of the politicians from both sides buying into it.  If the economy sucks in 2014, the Republicans will gain just like they did in 2010, so the Republicans have incentive to keep things in the gutter.

Give the Republicans nothing and we'll be better off as a country.
