    Many low income, largely minority (African American or Latino) communities are underserved in terms of access to fresh produce.  In these communities food stores are often limited to convenience stores and bodegas, which not only have higher prices but limited fresh produce.  This is a factor in contributing to the high levels of obesity and related health issues in these communities.  

    So there is a lot of efforts being made by these communities to call for major supermarket chains to open stores there.  And those who do often find that they do very well there because it is a relatively underserved market.  Pathmark opened up a store in Harlem years ago and it has very high per store/square foot revenue.
