  •  Voting Hours Must Extend Outside Normal Work Hrs. (13+ / 0-)

One of the ways the Ohio vote was suppressed this year was that the early voting was limited to work hours, so that the liberal-leaning working poor would have more difficulty getting to the polls.

or something similar - to cover before and after work?

I voted once at 9.59 one evening (in London) and was the last person in the door - not very popular, me, but I duly voted!

    •  Move election day to Saturday. No good reason to (0+ / 0-)

      keep it on Tuesday.

      •  But a lot of people work weekends, too (0+ / 0-)

Firefighters, police, doctors, nurses, veterinarians, retail workers, hair stylists, it's the sabbath for a lot of people, too... Some people will do souls to the polls, but others won't.

Two weeks of early voting works as long as you let each county supervisor help set the times.  In urban counties, you could have earlier openings and later closings if you needed them.  I can't vote if the polls are only open 7-7.  I leave my house at 6:45 am to get to work on time and have to stay until 6:30 pm.   I get home around 7:45.  The county I work in is not the same county I live in, so I can't pop out on lunch break to vote.  But 5-5 would work or 9-9.  Election Day could be 24 hours - midnight to midnight.

It's only our instant gratification culture that demands we have an answer within 10 minutes of the polls closing so it can be covered in "prime time."  Heck with that... Change it to preliminary results start being announced the next morning at 6 am local time, with results coming in until 6 pm - you'd have to have shifts of poll workers and county supervisors would need shift supervisors / deputy supervisors to handle the load.

Don't think anybody will go for that though, which is why I did absentee / vote by mail this year.
