if this results -- at least temporarily -- in customers coming in just because of his position on Obamacare.  A lot of Republicans are just stupid that way.

but they can't organize chick-fil-a type rallies at 1000 different places around the country.

    •  Yep - such mean spirits (4+ / 0-)

I know a woman--a Republican, of course--staunch--who routinely crosses picket lines just to spit in the strikers' eyes. Doesn't know the issues, doesn't care. Blows past picketers just 'cause she can. Despises unions. She's a retired union worker, too. SEIU. Living a nice middle class life, with good china, tall Christmas trees, travel. (I suspect part of her fury it is that she's pissed she spent 30 years of her life NOT being the boss. Chaps her authoritarian hide. Now, in retirement, she's president of my HOA. Yep, life under her rule is as inhospitable as it sounds.)

You just can imagine what she thinks about Obamacare. In fact, she really can't stand the idea of anybody getting proper, affordable care for any ailment, ever. Apparently, it's just too mushy a concept for her cold, hard heart. Can pay a million dollars? Then die in the streets, who cares. It's a good thing: it's "thinning the herd." Doesn't realize what she sounds like when she says things like that. Doesn't care. Flaunts her greed, her virtuelessness. Revels in it. Fancies herself a good person because she shops at Nordstrom, "knows her forks."

It's not a new species of vanity, this furious class consciousness amongst the fat, right-leaning middle (that resents and revokes its blue collar identity with a flippin' passion), but it sure does seem to be on steroids right now. Trying to think of historical parallels.

      •  Classic GOP 'IGMFY' mindset (1+ / 0-)

I am so sorry this miserable woman is president of your HOA.  While she hates the government being intrusive, I'm sure she loves to specify the exact color of beige that you can use to paint the trim on the condo building.

I also do not get that sort of mindset you describe in this woman - but I have certainly seen it.  Almost like they want to somehow put on airs - that they too can be Rush Limbaugh-like (I know, not a word...).

And of course, 'IGMFY' stands for 'I got mine....'

        •  yeah - *sigh* (0+ / 0-)

Having this woman as my HOA prez is a whole 'nother story; I appreciate your perspicacity. I told her early in our acquaintance that I was a Democrat, but she must not have believed me - not until Obama '08: not until she saw my bumper stickers and my yard sign, the latter of which she called to say, imperiously, that I must take down. (You're right about the paint - it's baby poop beige and we are forbidden to look at it sideways.) I wound up on her shit list for a long time over my public Obama booster materials. Brutal. I didn't know what kind of a hornets' nest I was stirring up.

This time around she didn't say a word all season ... total radio silence from her since late summer. I do wonder if she's embarrassed about Romney. Then again, she's never showed a capacity for shame before--and he's her brother in class crassness. Yeah, I don't understand her either. She does put on airs, constantly. It's so weird. So 1950s. She's not that old.
