    in literature in every age, but the mood of an age is reflected in popular culture.  The guarded optimism of the 1950s - e.g., Day the Earth Stood Still - gave way to the unbridled optimism of the 1960s via 2001: A Space Oddyse, and then it just degenerated into a bunch of shitpile dystopian futures.  Today we're not even really allowed to see optimistic futures anymore.  Studios won't fund them.
