  •  I'm used to 18 or 19 year old sophomores who (10+ / 0-)

can't read and who have parents without phones or who when called tell you to go fuck yourself and to never call again.

The MS Delta is a pretty rough place.  This year I started with 65 students and I am down to 38 because of drop outs, ALS, and withdrawals (to avoid long term suspensions).  The average reading level is 2nd grade, with my highest reader at 6th grade.  These are supposed to be HS sophomores prepping for the State test.

To have any chance of success I have to turn the room into a forced labor camp for MC test taking.

I think I'm done teaching in the Delta after this year.

And so sad for those young people.

Do any of the teachers work in teams?  That might make it a tad easier, although from what you describe it's a nigh on impossible situation.

that a large segment of the country faces -

and I hope you stick it out through the next few years as there are movements to address these very problems.

Digitalliteracy.gov is an effort to begin to touch these problems but it is going to take much more. Here in Mobile, Alabama we have some similar issues and yet I'm very hopeful. Having been "on the ground" during the Obama campaign working with OFA as well as the local democrats, I think it is going to happen. Hang in there.

      •  Nah, MTC has been placing teachers in the (0+ / 0-)

        district for 20+ years.

I'll just get a job in a district that is higher performing.
