but the ethnically diverse Rio Grande Valley, El Paso, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are stuck with the white, republican voting suburbs?

Think twice before you make such a statement, lest you fall into the same racist mindset as those who want session.

Furthermore, I'd love to see calling for states to secede or advocating for states to secede here on Daily Kos to be a bannable offense or at the very least a loss of TU status. It is damned harmful to the cause of electing more and better democrats if Democrats are demonizing whole swathes of the country that remain red in large part due to voter suppression efforts and gerrymandering of minority voters.

    •  In fact there is a petition for El Paso (0+ / 0-)

to secede from Texas and become part of New Mexico. I signed it, along with about 3 other people ;)

But the larger and more serious point of your comment is spot-on, and I agree with you.

    •  classic emmigration scenario applies (0+ / 0-)

El Paso doesn't have to stay either.  You are living in a repressive society that is systematically harassing you because of the color of your skin or your ethnic or religious heritage.  You don't make much money, the family can't all relocate at once.  You send the kids to a blue state, even if they are minors and have to live with a relative.  When they are through with school and go on to get good jobs, you go live with them.  (it happens, I have an acquaintance whose family story includes two such migrations).

Seriously, though, learn to be amused.  You aren't even responding to a post advocating secession.  You are replying to someone riffing on what the world would look like if Texas seceded, but Austin somehow managed to remain US territory.

Most posts about secession I've read on dkos fall into one of two categories.
            (1) Idiots!
            (2) Pay your debts before you go. Idiots!

Personally, I think discussing the real-world implications of secessionist fantasies is the best antidote.
