    As did Dayton's, another fine department store long ago eaten up by Macy's.

    But both Dayton's and Marshall Fields had traditions with local flavor, and buyers who sought out interesting merchandise.  Now Macy's buyers buy for the entire country, and it's a dull cookie cutter affair.  There is no local flavor, because they aren't local.  There is little that is special or exquisite, as they won't take that chance.

    There are bottom lines, and bottom lines.  In the case of Macy's, it is a bottom line built for a homogeneous android of a culture, everything the same from the east coast to the west, like McDonalds.  Utterly boring and uninspiring.
