  •  So they'll lease their intellectual property, (6+ / 0-)

ie:  Their Twinkie recipe, to China, where they will be baked by workers earning a dollar an hour who live in huge dormitories owned by the factory (description taken directly from Mitt's 47% secret tape).

Then the Twinkies will be exported back to us, for us to gorge and embalm ourselves with the chemicals....and grow more obese.....and need more health care and pharmaceuticals.  And the cycle continues uninterrupted by pesky labor situations and high manufacturing costs in the USA.

So it's all good....as long as the factory over there doesn't put formaldehyde and melamine and plaster of paris in the sponge and in the cream filling!

    •  'Cept that bake goods go stale in a couple days... (5+ / 0-)

Otherwise Hostess would have moved production offshore long ago. Which may explain why they tried those "chemically enhanced" doughs to extend the shelf life to weeks instead of days...

      •  I read that (0+ / 0-)

Twinkies last 25 days due to the recipe that excludes most ingredients that go bad.

        •  But shipping is too costly (0+ / 0-)

They would not be able to ship it by ocean freight, because that would take weeks.

        •  I deliberately left an open package (0+ / 0-)

of Ho-Hos in my car... in Phoenix... in the summertime.

Three months later and they looked exactly the same as the day I opened them. The chocolate never even melted. I haven't eaten them since.

          •  then you didn't finish the experiment (0+ / 0-)

three months later the end of the experiment was to see if they TASTED the same. sounds like you're not a good scientist.

            •  Hostess used to ship cake 'round the world... (2+ / 0-)

They had a very lucrative contract to supply military bases. They tried selling their cake and premium breads in the open market in Europe and the middle east, but that was a disaster. IIRC, the Richmond, VA plant made the sweet goods and they were stuffed into containers for ocean shipment, which as you can imagine wasn't very fast. Until Hostess (mis)management closed it monday, the Seattle cake bakery supplied cake products to Alaska that was shipped their via RO-RO ship, IIRC.
