    plan with an HSA account?

My employer offered us this option.

The HSA plan still offered free preventive care, but it had a very high deductible, $3000.  Then 100% coverage. It has lower premiums than the PPO plan.

And it requires you to open a Health Savings Account, which is like an IRA, except the money in it can be used to pay for covered health expenses.

I've heard it's a good option for people who are young and healthy and don't really go to the doctor for anything but a check up.  And if you end up with some catastrophic accident or disease, the most you'll pay out of pocket will still only be $4000 (including the deductible and prescriptions).

My roommate was visibly upset because she has had a lot of health related expenses lately. I still can't imagine what under Obamacare would cause the switch in plans.

My guess is that the employer just wanted to switch to a lower price plan and is hiding under Obamacare to justify it. Like I said I am really interested in what is going on here, and will try to get to the bottom of it.

...are switching to those plans, and not because of Obamacare, but just because of the general expense of health insurance and care. What were "standard plans" have become stupidly expensive.
