  •  Since most people would understand that CIA... (26+ / 0-)

missions are by nature secret, they wouldn't expect that the details of the mission should be discussed and debated in the media.  Most people that is--except, apparently for jackass republican politicians, who constantly put party before country.

You would think that McCain would understand the need to voice his "concerns" out of the hearing of the "bad guys"--who are just as able to watch McCain spout off on TV as are American audiences.  But now, in their efforts to try to score political points, the GOPers have again outed CIA agents and publicized the details of a covert CIA mission.

...the State Department presence in Benghazi "provided diplomatic cover" for the previously hidden CIA mission...

Republican "leadership" such as McCain and Graham should damn well know that CIA's secret agents hide under a variety of covers

The vast majority of the agency's overseas officers are under what is known as "official cover," which means they are posing as employees of another government agency. The State Department allows hundreds of its positions in embassies around the world to be occupied by CIA officers representing themselves as diplomats.

Most Americans who knew the above facts would understand that the mysteriously secretive diplomatic mission to Benghazi may have involved some covert mission aspects that, for reasons of national security, shouldn't be debated in the media.

But apparently the GOPers hate their own President and half of America so much that they don't care if they are endangering the national security or the lives of other operatives who may be at risk--as long as they can get in front of cameras and "demand" public exposure of sensitive information.

    •  And they want Libya to become another (5+ / 0-)

failed state in Africa, all so they can diminish President Obama's effectiveness in his second term.

They think this issue will put him on the defensive about foreign policy.

I have been saying to anyone and everyone I talk to about this that the big "tell" is the fact that of the 4 people who died, 2 were CIA.  Seems fishy that CIA people would die in an alleged embassy attack.  Clearly the CIA was very active in and around that embassy and they were the focus of that attack because they were up to some covert stuff.

I can't believe the Republicans are taking advantage of this precarious situation.  Either they decide to come out and tell the American people what was really going on, or they should shut up.  Confusion does not help those who want some disclosure with regard to our national security, or for those who prefer things to be classified.

        the WSJ report (emphasis mine)

...the State Department presence in Benghazi "provided diplomatic cover" for the previously hidden CIA mission, which involved finding and repurchasing heavy weaponry looted from Libyan government arsenals. These weapons are presumably from Muammar Gaddafi's stock of about 20,000 portable heat-seeking missiles, the bulk of which were SA-7 surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles.

What's odd is that a Libyan ship—which reportedly weighed 400 tons and included SA-7s—docked in southern Turkey on Sept. 6 and its cargo ended up in the hands of Syrian rebels. The man who organized that shipment, Tripoli Military Council head Abdelhakim Belhadj, worked directly with Stevens during the Libyan revolution.

Stevens' last meeting on Sept. 11 was with Turkish Consul General Ali Sait Akin, and a source told Fox News that Stevens was in Benghazi "to negotiate a weapons transfer in an effort to get SA-7 missiles out of the hands of Libya-based extremists..."

Given that most of the weapons going to hard-line jihadists in Syria are U.S.-made and are being handed out by the CIA, it's not a stretch to wonder if the CIA is indirectly arming Syrian rebels with heavy weapons as well...

It's also not a stretch that the "Libya-based extremists" would want to stop the CIA/ Ambassador Stevens from "Getting SA-7 missiles" out of their hands.

It's also not a stretch that the Syrian government--and it's supporters would be doing all in their power to prevent anyone from "indirectly arming Syrian rebels"...

So--for McCain, Graham, etc to endanger national security by broadcasting the details of covert CIA missions in Libya (or anywhere) to the bad guys is not just irresponsible; IMHO, it's criminal.
