  •  This is the time they need to get their act (3+ / 0-)

    together.

2016 will be wide open without an incumbent President.  Given the economy's continued refusal to light up, add in the present administration's seeming disinterest in how many people are able to make a living, and it could be a very good year to be a Republican.

But not a 2010-2012 style Republican.

This is a time to steal a page from the President's playbook and study a few former President's.  And that can get strange, because...

Where Obama spent a fair amount of time channeling Ronald Reagan (approach to campaigns, charisma, etc -- not policy), Republicans really need to steal a book from President Clinton's playbook.  They need to embrace Democratic ideas when they are popular with the electorate and make sense for the country.  Then they need to pretend that's what they were about all along.  "Gosh, we sure are glad Democrats are finally ready to do the right thing.  We've been right here waiting for this day all along."

Of course, it would help to have a candidate, but that part can wait a couple of years.
