if their labor costs are 40% and you gave the worker a 30% raise that means your costs would rise 12%. A customer would pay 12 cents more on the dollar

    •  But the prices are so low, still a bargain... (5+ / 0-)

If, for example, a product (hairspray, shampoo, whatever) costs $6 at CVS, and the same product now sells at Walmart for $3.50; well, so add 12%, and the product is now priced at $3.92.

You still save 1/3 of the price compared to CVS (or Walgreens, etc.).

You can buy a bleeping sweatshirt at Walmart for $6.   Most other stores will charge at least $15.  So, now, add 12 cents/dollar to pay fair wages to Walmart people, and the damn sweatshirt is now about $7 - still a major bargain.

        very greedy
In the old days we had around 3% inflation every year. Much of that was wages. Wages are just a part of the cost of doing business. Wages went up faster than inflation because of what I described above.

Then came Ronald Reagan and they started attacking wages. Yes the cost of the product went down but with the opposite effect. In the earlier example wages went up 30% but what you bought only went up 12%. Everybody wins. When you slash the wages 30% the price of the product only went down 12%. We did not feel it so much because so much of our stuff is made by people making slave wages overseas. If we want to get it going again we have to start a nationwide labor movement and make them pay more. I can think of no better place than Walmart. The plutocrats have to be kicked in the ass for that is all they understand. The most important person in the economy is the guy or girl working for a living. If they do well everybody does well.
