  •  Block Island residents, and visitors, have had (5+ / 0-)

a lively debate on the subject for a couple of years now, and the issue revolves primarily around the visual impact -- or lack thereof.  Mockups of what a turbine would look like from the Island's shore show a tiny thingy way out there on the horizon, and not much else.
The other issue at stake, for BI, is the impact on energy prices on the island, which is not linked to the mainland grid at all, and relies on several diesel generators, which provide some of the most expensive electricity per kwh in the country.  It's now expected that the turbines will have a link from their cable to the mainland, providing cheap juice to the Island.
I see it as a win-win.  But as far as I know, it's not a done deal yet.

for places like Monhegan, as well. Generators went in there maybe 10-12 years back, noisy and expensive.

The Shoals proposed as the site of Cape Wind are a productive fishing area.

My Money on the first construction is the Atlantic Wind Connection. 380 mile long HVDC grid from NJ to Virginia. Able to support 1700 4 mw turbines. 10- 20 miles offshore so no-one can see it. Part of Cape Wind is only 2.5 miles from shore.

And Cape Wind doesnt have its financing together.
