    If you consider a column the diameter of the blades extending down to the surface and upwards, you will realise that the area of the blade rotation is a tiny fraction of the total so the effect of reducing the energy in the column is marginal. Now realise that they ae spaced well apart and the total reduction compared to the energy passing is not going to have a  great effect, if any, on the power of the wind downstream.

    On the other hand, wave power generators placed strategically near to barrier islands and mangroves could reduce the damage to these natural defenses and even allow them to recover. In turn this would provide increased protection from storm surges in places like New Orleans.
