I had two different squadron commanders who were VN POWs. I was present when the last one, also a Hanoi Hilton alumni, was talking with one of his fellows when i was present in the early '80s. He spoke of the "canary" running for the senate. Both laughed in what I felt was a knowing and dismissive way. I did not know what was going on and did not feel it was my place to ask. Only much later did I learn they were speaking about McCain.

Every one of these men "broke" while in jail. How they broke and under what conditions was a point of pride for each of them. I always felt their standing in their special circle of peers depended upon what they took and how they deceived their captor. Canary came about because many thought he broke too easily and too often. That was the judgment of his peers. I neither have the experience to evaluate their beliefs nor am I in any position to judge. My limited exposure to that era's POWs led my to believe that McCain is not highly regarded by his peers and many who served under him. The only personal knowledge I have of Grumpy is that he is hasty in his decision making, opportunistic, often reckless, and nearly always self serving in his actions since coming to public service. I associate those characteristics with someone who could be called a canary.
