Remember, quite a few long-time incumbants lost too. The GOP has lost much of its shine of late, because the results that it's promised haven't happened. Instead, we have the mess that we're in, which voters are finally connecting to years of GOP misrule. Folks like Romney make this easier to see and harder to deny.

Romney's "gifts" comment was not just offensive, it was wrong. Groups that Dems have supposedly been bribing with "gifts" have been voting for Dems for years, even when Dems consistently lost. Why are they suddenly winning, then? It's not the "gifts", but that a whole bunch of other voters are finally realizing that the "gifts" that the GOP has been promising them aren't coming. I.e. jobs, better jobs, higher salaries, better benefits, better schools, a sense of hope, etc. Dems, on the other hand, have been delivering them, albeit more slowly than they'd like--and these voters are also realizing that this is due to GOP obstructionism.

The GOP lost because of karma. What they put out is coming back at them.
