  •  People did go hungry but not at the pace (3+ / 0-)

    of today's hunger rate even with food stamps.  People could grow their food and fish without licenses.   I am familiar with the other side of the tracks.   People WERE more community oriented and that all changed in Reagaonomics if we really want to know WHEN.

    We the People have to make a difference and the Change.....Just do it ! Be part of helping us build a veteran community online. United Veterans of America

      I agree 100% with your hunger and food statement but I disagree that it started with Reagan, the decline in standards of living and wages accelerated with Reagan and ever since.  The chart in the following article which discusses the topic shows clearly that after Nixon took the US off the gold standard in 1971 (for settlement of international debt payments) the decline started (OPEC oil embargo in 1973/74 was a direct result imo). Nixon did this ironically to accelerate the war in vietnam and France was demanding gold only instead of fiat dollars for settlement of trade.

          Just had a conversation with my wife about it before I made my comment and even reading the diary.   In the area we live (WA) there still are milkmen, brother-in-law was having it delivered for some time and they are still around... I was amazed.
