    But I'd say that the books are written to place sympathies not as much with the Middle Ages as with the Dark Ages. His neoCeltic clan and neoViking Great Halls are very much the places to be as opposed to the Medievalist fiefdoms.

    Since his central conceit is precisely sufficient monkeying with the basic laws of physics to break the technological basis of the existing industrial society, the US is pretty much by definition not a feasible state under the technology he imagines after his Apocaplyptic Event.

    His largest successor state, in Iowa, is very much more along the lines of taking current institutions and cutting them to fit, but he doesn't get to Iowa for quite a while.
