    •  wow holy cow, and the other thing... (2+ / 0-)

Wow and thanks (blush:-)   I'd almost be up for lobbying for an FP slot plus or minus that I need to write more diaries and fewer comments;-)

Re. That Other Topic: per Markos, that subject is closed for the foreseeable future, to which I'll add, it would be preferable to avoid even getting into it in random comment threads, so as to not start another lengthy digression/thrash and risk people getting banned who are generally highly valuable around here.  So let's drop that one here, and nobody else bring it up in reply to either of these comments.

Re. "fifty cents," I was referring to commercial recommendations, not to social Recs on sites such as this.  Though as we've seen in the past, occasionally "posses" form to either rec-up or rec-down (abusive HR) people on the basis of ideological battles, personal vendettas, and so on.  When organized "posse" activity is found it tends to get people banned.

Back to the "asset" topic:  Holy cow, I just expanded that thread back to its start and saw 339 Recs on my original comment, or more than I can recall getting on any diary except possibly Stochastic Terrorism.  Eeyow!;-)

Hopefully I'll see you at the DK "Christmas Party" in a couple of weeks....

    •  BTW, that original comment... (2+ / 0-)

... the one that got me 339 recs, was straight-up NLP.  NeuroLinguistic Programming, a set of techniques and theories originally developed for use in clinical psychology, that has spread to other areas where effective communication is critical.

I believe it's OK to use in political discussions/debates in order to talk people down from being emotionally wound-up or get them to come in from the extremes to at least be able to understand a more moderate perspective.  But I don't believe it's OK to use for persuading others to "agree with you" other than to bring them in from one extreme or another so they can hear what you're saying.

I don't believe it's OK to use in sales or other contexts where there is an economic self-interest at work, or for sexual seduction, or for other purposes that may be seen as taking unfair advantage of others for one's own benefit.

In general, OK when the intentions are altruistic, not-OK as a means of manipulation.  (Beyond that, are techniques for inducing altered states of consciousness, which should only be used with explicit permission beforehand.)

BTW, Obama is a natural master of this stuff, and I do not believe he was ever trained in it or studied it formally.  His natural personality style and normal way of communicating coincidentally embody a lot of these communications techniques.  And it would probably not do him any good to study it formally, since that might only interfere with his natural talents in this area.

      We got the future back.
