  •  Can someone explain (15+ / 0-)

why this wasn't plain all along?

SS may or may not need a lot of fixing, but it has absolutely nothing to do with reducing the deficit or reducing government spending.

Having it in there is just allowing the republicans to throw in their pet target for destruction, an unrelated issue called "entitlement reform" and put out the meme that the democrats aren't serious about reducing the deficit because they won't put SS on the table.

It's bullshit and it was always bullshit.  Thank dog someone beside Bernie Sanders is calling it like it is.  No one was listening to him no matter how wise he is.  Why the President didn't say it a year ago I'll never understand.  But they are saying it now. (Jay Carney said it a week ago as well).

Kent Conrad has a stick up his ass - but in this he is correct.

    Sigh.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Barack Obama

    •  Making the Social Security system stronger and (0+ / 0-)

better for more folks who need it improved right now is actually an excellent idea?

Where have all the progressives gone?

      •  We love the idea! (4+ / 0-)

It just needs to be taken out of the fiscal cliff/deficit reduction negotiations.

        •  It's all about a smarter budget and a better (0+ / 0-)

          economy.

Why are we afraid to be Democrats?

I trust that Obama will support Begich proposal and other Democrats and perhaps even some Republicans and certainly the American people.

I also trust the President not to sign off on anything regressive.
